BANDS B and C - TIMO KATILA
Timo Katila, the conductor for the two elementary bands, has done valuable work schooling young players new to their instruments for over ten years. He began his work at the Rauma Music Academy as a Flute teacher in 1980 before taking up the post of a music theory teacher in the very same institute. In addition to his everyday job, Katila has made it his business to arrange and compose music, most of his creations being pedagogic material for wind instruments and bands.

HONONARY CONDUCTOR DIR.MUS PENTTI JALONEN
Enter Pentti “Pepe” Jalonen, the founder of the Youth Band, known by the townsfolk and revered by the players. The Rauma Youth band was at his tender mercies for almost half a decade before he literally passed the baton in 1995. Hundreds of aspiring young musicians played in the Band during his time as the chief conductor, some of whom have now become professionals playing in the top orchestras of Finland and Europe. Hardly replaced and certainly not forgotten, Pentti Jalonen, 86 years old, continues as the supreme overseer of the Rauma Youth Band. “Pepe” attends the traditional May Day march every year, and conducts the opening piece of the annual concert held near the anniversary of his birthday.
